Flame detectors respond to the radiant energy emitted by flames, usually in ultraviolet or infrared ranges, so they detect fires that are actively flaming and spreading quickly. They work best when visible flames are present and can be seen by the sensor.

In a smoky, smoldering fire, there may be little to no flame and a lot of smoke. Without a distinct flame for the detector to sense, the flame detector may not trigger, and the smoke can further obscure or absorb the flame radiation it would rely on. This makes it the least effective choice for this situation.

Other scenarios tend to produce noticeable flames that the detector can pick up, such as rapidly spreading fires or fires with bright flames, while an electrical fire may still generate flames that the detector can detect if they are present.
